The Faculty of Archaeology at Warsaw University offers a unique opportunity for students to pursue a first-cycle full-time course in Archaeology with instruction in English. This program covers new trends in archaeological research and discussions on archaeology's social functioning, providing students with elementary knowledge and practical skills to participate in excavations around the world. With a wide range of courses, from general introductions to ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and South America, to excavation methodology, practical field documentation, data acquisition and processing techniques, and museology, the program equips students with the necessary tools to succeed in the modern academic practice.
Fieldwork practicum is a significant part of the program, with field surveys usually performed in spring or autumn and no less than three excavation seasons usually performed in the summer. These excavations are directed by researchers affiliated with the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Warsaw or abroad, in countries such as Egypt, Georgia, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Bulgaria, Italy, South America, and more. This hands-on experience provides students with specialist knowledge in archaeology, enabling their active participation in excavations at sites of diverse character, from reading and documenting stratigraphy to handling measuring devices, preparing research or museum catalogue entries, searching archives, performing scholarly analyses, drawing conservation records, and realizing exhibitions.
Students also develop professional and general knowledge in the course of their studies, as well as competencies in individual work and cooperation within a team, forming a strong foundation for further studies at the second-cycle level in archaeology and other fields.
The program is taught entirely in English and offers a unique opportunity for students from all over the world to study archaeology in Poland. With an admission limit of 20 students, the program ensures a small student-to-faculty ratio, providing students with personalized attention and opportunities for interaction with their instructors. The Faculty of Archaeology at Warsaw University has a long tradition of excellence in archaeological research and education, and its first-cycle full-time course in Archaeology is no exception. Students who complete the program will be well-equipped to pursue careers in archaeology, cultural heritage, museums, education, and other related fields.
