The MA in Ecohydrology is designed to produce highly specialized professionals with expertise in the field of Ecohydrology (EH), a sub-discipline of hydrology that focuses on understanding the ecological processes influenced by the hydrological cycle. The program covers a range of domains related to water science, including ecohydrology, water, environment, catchment sustainability potential, ecohydrological biotechnologies, and nature-based solutions. The program emphasizes the importance of understanding the link between ecology and hydrology and applying this knowledge to protect and sustainably manage natural environments. Graduates of the program will have the skills to plan for sustainable aquatic ecosystem use and reverse the processes of human-caused degradation.
The program covers a range of subjects, including environmental modelling and statistics, ecotoxicology, environmental and landscape planning, ecological risk assessment, and applied hydrology. Students will also learn about urban ecohydrology, phytotechnologies, and phytoremediation, and wetlands and land-water ecotones. The program also covers international water resources law and environmental GIS, among other topics.
Graduates of the program will be able to apply advanced tools to plan, design, and execute ecohydrological projects. They will have excellent communication and research skills, making them effective team members, decision-makers, and policy influencers. As part of the program, students will participate in a thesis seminary, thesis laboratory, and diploma work.
Students in the program will have the opportunity to participate in the ERASMUS MUNDUS Master in Applied Ecohydrology (MAEH), a collaborative program between the University of Algarve (Portugal), University of Lubeck (Germany), and University of Antwerp (Belgium). This program, which began in 2021, offers four editions of scholarships between 2021-2026. The MAEH offers students the chance to expand their knowledge and expertise in the field of ecohydrology, and to work with leading experts in the field.
