The Faculty of Building Services, Hydro and Environmental Engineering offers a comprehensive Master of Science in Engineering programme in Environment Protection Engineering. This two-year programme focuses on the research and engineering activities that aim at mitigating the negative impacts of human activity on the environment. It is primarily designed for graduates of environmental engineering or other undergraduate engineering programmes such as civil, mechanical or chemical engineering.
During the first year of the programme, students gain in-depth knowledge in various areas such as computational methods, environmental fluid mechanics, chemistry, scientific programming, data analysis, and management. Additionally, students take specialized engineering courses that cover specific topics within the field of environment protection engineering such as environmental protection management, surface and groundwater protection, soil diagnostic techniques, monitoring of the environment, applied climatology and global climate change, and municipal solid waste treatment technologies. In the second year, students take further courses that focus on land reclamation and development, irrigation and drainage, remote sensing of the environment, pro-ecological technologies, energy systems modelling and optimisation, and other elective courses.
In the third and fourth semesters, students work on their final project and prepare a master thesis on a proposed topic. The completed thesis should demonstrate acquired scientific and technical skills and understanding of environmental issues. Graduates of this programme are well-equipped to develop their individual/independent professional practices, carry out environmental impact assessments, design and execute or supervise environment protection measures in companies, maintain monitoring networks, and provide expertise to local and regional authorities for decision-making.
The programme prepares students for positions as consulting engineers, environmental affairs engineers for industrial and transportation companies, land reclamation and waste management companies, water and sewer companies, engineering design studios and consulting companies, civil servants in national, regional and local environmental agencies and services, environmental inspection and monitoring units. It provides graduates with a deep understanding of environmental issues and the skills to address the challenges associated with protecting the environment and achieving sustainable development.
Furthermore, the programme has been accredited by the Accreditation Commission of Universities of Technology and received the EURO-ACE® label, which signifies that it satisfies ENAEE standards specified in the EUR-ACE Standards and Guidelines for Accreditations of Engineering Programmes. This European quality label for engineering degree programmes at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels gives international value and recognition to the engineering qualifications of graduates. In summary, this programme provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to become competent professionals in the field of environment protection engineering, addressing the global need for sustainable development and environmental protection.
