The Trans-Atlantic M.A. Dual Degree Graduate Program in International History and Security Studies

The Trans-Atlantic M.A. Dual Degree Graduate Program in International History and Security Studies is a two-year full-time program offered jointly by Collegium Civitas and West Virginia University. The program is taught in English and offers students the opportunity to study International History and Security Studies with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe, the European Union, and its external relations, as well as contemporary security threats such as terrorism, energy security, and environmental challenges.

Program Structure

During the first year of the program, students will study at Collegium Civitas, taking core modules in International History and Security Studies. In the second year, students will spend two semesters at West Virginia University, where they will study further courses in international history, with elective courses in ethics in global politics, history of intelligence, foreign policy, history of dictatorships and democratization, human rights, international law, and environmental challenges.

Dual Degrees

Upon graduation, students will receive two master's degrees: an M.A. in History from West Virginia University and a Magister degree in International Relations from Collegium Civitas.

Program Outcomes

The program provides students with advanced knowledge and understanding in the areas of International Relations, Diplomacy, Key Topics in Contemporary Security Studies, Aspects of International Law, Ethics, and Human Rights, Processes of European Political and Economic Integration, Topics in Global and European History, Foreign Policy Analysis, Central and Eastern European Studies, and Contemporary Security Threats.

In addition, students will acquire advanced analytical skills in the domains of foreign and security policy, the capacity to critically engage with and utilize theories and concepts in international history, skills for public speaking, negotiation and debate, report writing, cross-cultural communication, flexibility, teamwork, leadership, and project management.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the program are well-prepared for careers in the public sector at national and regional levels in the spheres of foreign and security policy, justice and home affairs, and development and overseas aid. They can also work in international organizations and institutions, European Union institutions, the media, non-governmental organizations (national and international), the cultural sector, private consultancies, and think tanks.
