The Public History program offered at this university is a unique opportunity for graduates to explore and promote the public uses of history. This program is not only aimed at history graduates but also welcomes graduates from other disciplines who are interested in researching and promoting the public uses of history. Public history has been a sub-discipline of history since the 1970s and focuses on the ways in which knowledge about the past is present in social consciousness and how it can be instilled in this consciousness.
The courses in the program focus on the theoretical framework and mechanisms of shaping the historical consciousness, including the politics of history. The program also offers practical ways of influencing historical memory, starting from collecting and processing the testimonies of the past, to speech-writing and preparing texts promoting historical knowledge, exhibitions, historical installations, and more. The chronological overview of the past presented in this program concentrates on elements that evoke debates and controversies, as they are present in the public sphere.
A graduate of this program will have the knowledge and skills required to collect, preserve, process and promote the heritage of the past in a conscious and competent way. They will also be able to research how others do that. These competences will enable graduates to find employment in various institutions, including political parties, local governments, societies, governmental agencies, museums, open-air museums, creative art groups and companies, publishing houses, press, new media, and more. Graduates will also have the option to continue their education at the PhD level in the humanities.
To apply for this program, interested students must provide the required documents, including a Bachelor or Master degree certificate, transcript of grades/supplement from Bachelor or Master studies, certificate confirming English Language knowledge on B2 level, passport photocopy, and digital passport size photo. By completing this program, graduates will have acquired skills and knowledge that will make them valuable in various institutions involved in preserving, forming, and propagating the memory of the past.
