Description
The Faculty of Physics and the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Warsaw offer a unique program called the Master Quantum Physics and Chemistry – Individual Research Studies. This second cycle, full-time program focuses on education through participation in scientific research related to quantum physics or chemistry.
The education is based on world-class scientific research conducted at the Faculty of Physics and the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Warsaw. Under the supervision of a scientific supervisor, students will follow an individual study plan and engage in scientific research, self-education, and tutoring. The program does not emphasize passing specific subjects, but largely through participation in scientific research. This allows students to gain practical experience in their field of study and develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Students in this program will have their own research budget, providing them with the resources to conduct research independently or as part of a team. Additionally, the program offers a wide range of laboratory activities, access to computer labs, and well-equipped specialist libraries. Students also have the opportunity to make their own projects and prototypes in the Makerspace@UW studio.
As part of their studies, students can also undertake internships. The classes are held at the Faculty of Physics and the Faculty of Chemistry, located at Pasteura Street. The graduates of this program have competencies enabling them to independently and team solve difficult and openly defined problems. Their proficiency in quantum physics and chemistry allows them to participate in advanced scientific research.
However, these competencies are universal, and graduates have the knowledge and ability to create mathematical models, analyze data, including using machine learning, and communicate their findings effectively. The program is taught in English and follows an academic educational profile.
Candidates with Polish diplomas must qualify for the program based on a written exam and an interview. The written exam consists of ten tasks scored on a scale of 0 to 10, with a maximum score of 50 points. The thematic scope of the written exam includes physics and chemistry topics at the level of the first-cycle physics and chemistry studies. The interview takes place entirely in English and is assessed on a scale of 0 to 50 points according to specific criteria, including the candidate's presentation of their course of studies, a presentation on a topic of their choice concerning quantum physics or chemistry, and discussion of the presentation with the examination board.
The program is designated as S2-QPC and requires a minimum of three students to run, with an admission limit of ten students. The program duration is two years. In summary, the Master Quantum Physics and Chemistry – Individual Research Studies program provides students with the opportunity to participate in world-class scientific research related to quantum physics or chemistry, gain practical experience, and develop critical skills that can be applied in various fields.
